William Blythe Ltd is a leader in inorganic chemistry supplying a specialist range of products to use in advanced applications around the world. The chemical manufacturing site in Accrington is increasingly reliant upon its skills base to stay ahead of the global competition while operating in the UK / EU’s tightly regulated industrial environment.
As a top tier COMAH site, William Blythe is highly regulated and as part of regular audits the Company must demonstrate competence.
William Blythe committed to the Gold Standard framework in the process industries. The framework provides guidance on key competencies, qualifications and training required for specific job roles in the process industries. For William Blythe this provided a clear route for raising skill levels across the business and an ability to demonstrate competence during an audit.
Initially 54 workers worked towards a range of business improvement, production support, process operations, engineering and laboratory PAA\VQ-SET qualifications. The fundamental success of the programme was based on bespoke underpinning knowledge workshops that formed the foundation of individuals’ learning and development.
The training provider, BIT by BIT, supported William Blythe for three years, providing expertise and guidance for the qualifications. The assessments and IQA services were provided by them initially until William Blythe staff were qualified and experienced enough to fully take over the programmes themselves.
Several staff from operations, engineering and the laboratories completed the Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment and the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices enabling William Blythe to apply for and achieve Approved Centre Status in November 2013.
