These occupational competence qualifications will provide learners with the knowledge and skills to work

within the Signmaking Industry as a signmaker or in other related roles.


Signmakers design, make and fit all types of signs for commercial and non-commercial use, such as, road traffic signs, signs for business premises, indoor and outdoor exhibition displays, shop fronts, and designs for vehicle bodies. Work as a signmaker would be likely to involve working with a range of materials, tools and equipment.


Qualification Content


The qualifications contain Mandatory Units covering generic knowledge and skills including Health and Safety and efficient working relationships. 


Optional Units cover carrying out a range of activities within a Signmaking environment such as engraving, etching, joining and forming operations. There are also optional units covering installation operations for commercial and road traffic signage.


Who Can Take these Qualifications?


The Level 2 qualifications are intended for learners who are new entrants to the Signmaking sector and wish to develop their knowledge and skills to enable safe progression into the workplace/employment.


The Level 2 and 3 qualifications will benefit learners who are already in employment within a Signmaking environment but require additional knowledge and skills as part of an existing job role or to enable career progression.


There are no prerequisites to achieve these qualifications but they must be achieved in the workplace.

  • PAA\VQ-SET SVQ 3 in Signmaking at SCQF Level 6 - GK1J 23

CSCS Cards


Achievement of a Signmaking qualification at Level 2 or 3 will also enable an individual to apply for a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.
