Apprenticeships Glossary - What does it all mean?

Apprenticeship Levy

The Apprenticeship Levy is a levy on UK employers to fund new apprenticeships. All employers with a pay bill over £3 million each year must pay the apprenticeship levy from 6 April 2017.

Apprenticeship Standard

Apprenticeship standards show what an apprentice will be doing and the skills required of them, by job role. Each apprenticeship standard has an assessment plan produced by Trailblazers.

End Point Assessment (EPA)

EPAs are undertaken at the end of an apprenticeship to test that an apprentice is fully capable of doing their job before they receive their apprenticeship certificate.

End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO)

An independent organisation that undertakes the EPA of an apprenticeship.

Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA)

The ESFA is responsible for funding education and skills for children, young people and adults.

External Quality Assurance (EQA)

The EQA provider monitors the performance of different EPAOs and the effectiveness of the apprenticeship standard and assessment plan.

Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA)

The IfA is responsible for supporting the development of apprenticeship standards and assessment plans by employer groups; publishing approved standards and assessment plans and ensuring that all EPAs are quality assured.

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England. Ofqual are also able to deliver EQA for an apprenticeship standard.

Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP)

A list of organisations that have been approved by the ESFA to deliver apprenticeship training to employers using the apprenticeship service.

T levels are new technical study programmes that will sit alongside Apprenticeships within a reformed skills training system; it will introduce a new framework of 15 technical routes to skilled employment, covering classroom-based training programmes (T levels) and work-based programmes (Apprenticeships).

Trailblazers are employer-led groups that develop Apprenticeship standards.
