National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) NVQs are work-related, competence-based qualifications developed by industry experts. They reflect the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and show that a candidate is competent in the area of work the NVQ framework represents. Did you know... over six and a half million NVQs have been awarded since they were introduced (www.ofqual.gov.uk) NVQs are based on UK approved National Occupational Standards. These standards are statements of performance that describe what competent people in a particular occupation are expected to be able to do and know. National Occupational Standards define all the main aspects of an occupation, including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements and the knowledge and understanding that underpin competent performance. Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) SVQs are the equivalent of NVQs, but are approved by SQA. Vocationally-Related Qualifications (VRQs) VRQs are a range of specialist qualifications designed for a particular sector and help provide the knowledge and skills that can be used in a job or to support an NVQ. VRQs are classroom based qualifications and are assessed through a combination of written or practical tests, examinations or assignments.

The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is a new framework that provides a different way of recognising qualifications and skills and is at the heart of a major reform of the vocational qualifications (VQ) system.
