QCF Assessing Qualifications

There are 4 new Assessor qualifications:

Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment - knowledge only unit, intended for those who wish to gain an understanding of the principles and practices of assessment without any requirement to practice as assessors.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment - intended for assessors who assess occupational competence in the learner's work environment, and covers:  observation of performance, examination of products of work, questioning the learner, discussion with the learner, use of others (witness testimony), reviewing learner statements, RPL.

Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement - intended for assessors who assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the work environment (e.g. workshop, classroom or other training environments) and includes:  assessment of the learner in simulated environments, skills tests, oral and written questions, assignments, projects, case studies, RPL.

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement - intended for assessors who assess both occupational competence in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in environments other than the workplace (e.g. workshop, classroom or other training environment).

It is likely that trainee assessors, assessing competence in the workplace will achieve the Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment.  However, centres delivering the new Assessor qualifications should carefully review the environment in which a trainee assessor will be assessing and the different assessment methods/types of evidence being used (as outlined above), as this will determine if the Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement or the Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement would be more appropriate.  

QCF Internal Quality Assurance Qualifications

There are 3 new Internal Verifier (IV) qualifications:

Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice - knowledge only unit, intended for those who wish to gain an understanding of the principles and practices of internal quality assurance without any requirement to practice.

Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice - intended for those people who maintain the quality of assessment, i.e. Internal Verifiers.

Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice - intended for those who lead a team of internal quality assurance staff.

For the majority of trainee IVs, the Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is likely to be the most suitable qualification, as it would be unusual for most trainee IVs to be in a position to lead a team of IVs.
